Of Birthdays and Roses

Last night, she twirled and she swayed to the slow rotation of the world. For others, it was a rotation just like the rotation of the past days but for her, last night marked the end of the world’s seventeenth revolution with her in it. It was the beginning of another journey, so to speak.

And so, to her, I offer this quote from one of the books I dearly love:

“You’re beautiful, but you’re empty…One couldn’t die for you. Of course, an ordinary passerby would think my rose looked just like you. But my rose, all on her own, is more important than all of you together, since she’s the one I’ve watered. Since she’s the one I put under glass, since she’s the one I sheltered behind the screen. Since she’s the one for whom I killed the caterpillars (except the two or three butterflies). Since she’s the one I listened to when she complained, or when she boasted, or even sometimes when she said nothing at all. Since she’s my rose.” – Antoine de Sainte-Exupery, The Little Prince

The Little Prince loved his rose by investing so much time and effort in her. The rose is an embodiment of when the fox said that love comes from investing in other people.

Elsie, you are our rose. You are a product of countless investments by the people in your life. The beauty that you developed and are now exuding is one of the returns of all the years and months we’ve spent with and on you. You are unlike any other rose out there because you have a different and equally special set of people who planted you, pruned you, watered you and took care of you.

You are His rose. Without Him you would not have been entrusted to the people you have now. He invested His life, every single drop of His blood, so you can be the most beautiful rose of the brightest red hue. He took out all of your thorns, each one of them sharp and lodged deep in your stem, and wore them on His head. He breathed His life into you. He is your Prince, the One who would search all the world just to find you. In a rosebush, He will instantly know who you are. He loves you.
