Beggar

by joanabagano

As I walk down the darkness
Eyes roam
My eyes roam
Eyes meet

They say

There is a sorrow
That comes with the nighttime
As each star is hung above

They say

Give me a flower
That withers not
Or never says
I love you not

I listen

There is a lullaby
That hums as the stars
Twinkle and fall from above

As I walk down the darkness
Hearts beat

I feel

My hands are bare
With nothing but a prayer
Not a penny to spare

I see
In the darkness

Hands reach out
Palms open
Palms close
Into a fist
Tight and empty
Stomachs tight
Stomachs empty
Hungry
A fist
Ah no, there was never a feast
No lullaby
No penny
No flower.
